Vielong is a Spanish family business that has existed since 1940 and specializes in razors and shaving brushes. Many shaving brushes are made with badger hair. But anyone who buys brushes made of animal hair can never know exactly which animal had to die and how. Almost all badger hair (called silvertip on the brush) comes from China. A few years ago there were still a few farms in Canada, but there was a change in the law. Nowadays, products made from badgers can no longer be exported from Canada. Since then, China has had the global monopoly on badger hair. In our view, the production method and origin of the natural hair are definitely questionable. The badger is no longer protected worldwide and is not considered an endangered species. It can therefore be hunted without restriction. In order to obtain the hair for brushes, brooms and the like, the badger is not sheared but killed. This is the reason why we do not want to offer badger hair brushes under any circumstances. Synthetic hair made from man-made fibers didn't seem like the right way to go either, nor did plant fibers, which are too hard for this use. When we discovered Vielong's horsehair brushes, this was the solution for us, because the hair is of organic origin, thus biodegradable and at the same time produced without any animal suffering. The mane and tail of the Andalusian horses are trimmed and cut every year during the spring grooming to prepare the horses for the summer and to make them more comfortable in hot temperatures. Only the hair that has already been cut off is used for Vielong's brushes. To ensure that the hair meets the strictest quality and hygiene standards, it is prepared and washed in a complex process and then processed into brushes so that customers end up with an environmentally friendly, sustainable and ethically sound product.
